HMEDA members are concerned that regional health authorities are not following a competitive bidding process when selecting providers of medical equipment (on a loan basis at the hospital discharge stage). HMEDA would like to see the Provincial Government direct the regional health authorities to provide fair, transparent and open public sector procurement and that requests for proposal do not favour one proponent over another. HMEDA believes that Requests for proposal should be developed with input from all interested parties - patients, direct care-givers, occupational therapists, equipment dealers and administrators/discharge planners. Vendors should have access to information on procurement opportunities, processes and results. Requests for proposal should be developed with a focus on relevant aspects of services to be provided and should require the proposer to offer/demonstrate: Value for money Choice of consumer paid or publicly funded equipment supply Staff that are authorized to sell and service all products Certified, qualified and trained staff Ability to service communities across BC
