Introduction, modification or repeal of legislation, a bill or regulation

Request that changes be made to the School Act and associated regulations to allow time during regular school hours throughout the school year for teachers to work on reporting of student learning to enable meaningful communication between students, parents and teachers. In addition a request to government to develop guidelines to protect student data, including images of students on platforms like FreshGrade. Request that adequate funding, resources and appropriate timelines be provided for implementation of K-12 curriculum. Request that government increase budgets for building schools and provide to school districts the funding needed to support portable classrooms that are required because of inadequate capital funding that does not meet the needs of the growing students enrolments. Request to adopt a province-wide sanctuary school policy for all public schools to enable all children and youth to register and attend school regardless of the provision of the paperwork and documentation required by regulation. This to uphold all children's and youth's human right to an education. Request that government enact legislation or regulations that would require superintendents, secretary-treasurers and deputy superintendents to disclose on an annual basis: 1. Affiliations with other education-related organizations. 2. Affiliations with any corporations or business that do business with or intend to do business with a BC school district. 3. Any and all income, honorariums, and payment for service. 4. Any in-kind services or gifts from other organizations or corporations. 5. Participation in or attendance at activities organized by corporations. This to ensure that those in the most senior positions of responsibility and power in the school system handle their responsibility in a transparent, accountable manner. Request that the government reinstate the adult education funding that was cut to allow adult learners to upgrade and/or complete their education in order to obtain well-paying jobs. Request that the Ministry of Education suspend the mandatory implementation of the new K-9 reporting order (Student Progress Report Order) for 2016-17 to provide for consultation and for school districts to provide adequate time for teachers to implement the changes.

Environment

Request that the government publicly acknowledge the imminent threat to the planet posed by climate change. Actions to include: limiting infrastructure projects that lock BC into increased extraction of carbon-based resources; setting firm goals of sourcing 100% of BC's electrical needs from renewable resources within two decades; refusing to approve the Kinder Morgan pipeline. In addition request that the BC government not enter into trade deals that interfere with BC's attempts to discontinue extractive projects that are damaging to our environment and climate. Urge the government of BC to reverse its decision to approve the Site C Dam Project and urge government to respect First Nations opposition to the project because of its effects on treaty rights, cultural values, wildlife, and fishing.
