Arranging meeting between an individual and a public office holder for purpose of lobbying

Arranging meetings to meet with elected officials to discuss cancer prevention research. Information will be prepared by myself, but one of our organization's Health Promotion Coordinators will be present at the meeting if they are in a MLA's local area. Intent is to educate and provide support for healthy public policies that will reduce population cancer incidence. Specifically, we are interested in policies that will reduce tobacco use and improve healthy living.

Health

Introduction, modification or repeal of legislation, a bill or regulation

The week of November 23-27, 2015 the Society is sending a letter to all active MLAs about a new highly addictive tobacco product on the Canadian market: menthol capsule cigarettes. In order to prevent youth from starting to smoke, the Society recommends the BC government amend the provincial Tobacco Control Act to ban all flavoured tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes and capsules. The letter will be sent via email from local Canadian Cancer Society staff within each MLA's jurisdiction.

The purpose of the meeting is to update the Hon. Minister of Health and the Opposition Spokesperson for Health on research relating to three cancer prevention topics: tobacco, sugary drinks and HPV. The intended outcome is that the Hon Minister and MLA will consider the information presented if developing a program or policy related to these 3 areas in the future.
