Organization Information

Canadian Medical Association
The CMA is a national, voluntary association of physicians that advocates on behalf of its members and the public for access to high-quality health care. The CMA also provides leadership and guidance to physicians. The CMA was formed in Quebec City in 1867, just three months after the birth of Canada. It was created by 164 physicians who recognized the need for a national medical body. They selected Sir Charles Tupper, who would later serve as Canada's prime minister, as the first president. Today the CMA has more than 80,000 members, and lobbies vigorously on behalf of both members and their patients ¿ on Parliament Hill, during federal election campaigns and in the media. The CMA also takes the lead on public health issues. The CMA's goal is to ensure the survival and robust health of Canada's medicare system in the face of numerous challenges.

Arranging meeting between an individual and a public office holder for purpose of lobbying

The CMA will meet with public office holders to discuss a variety of issues relating to the health and wellbeing of Canadians. The main focus of the CMA this year will be seniors care. The CMA will be looking for the major political parties to commit to a national seniors strategy involving all levels of government with Ottawa taking the lead role. Caring for a senior in a hospital is expensive, costing around $1,000 a day. Compare that to long-term care at $130 a day and home care at $55 a day. The CMA estimates some $2.3 billion a year could be put to better use in our health care system if we learned to spend smarter by investing in long-term and community care.
