  • Lobbyists Transparency Act

The BC government published the new Lobbyists Transparency Regulations on November 25, 2019. The regulations will come into force on May 4, 2020. At that time, the title of the current statute will change from the Lobbyists Registration Act to the Lobbyists Transparency Act, or LTA.

The LTA contains a number of amendments to increase transparency in lobbying. They include the requirement for lobbyists to complete a Monthly Return containing details of actual lobbying activities in the previous month by the 15th of each month.

In anticipation of the changes, a new BC Lobbyists Registry is in development that will replace the current Lobbyists Registry on May 4, 2020. The new Lobbyists Registry will be user-friendly and similar to the federal system.

New FAQs and Guidance Documents to assist with understanding the LTA regulatory changes and using the new Lobbyists Registry are being published on the ORL website. Use the menu to the left to review the LTA resources currently available to assist you. Additional documents and support material will continue to be posted as we near the May 4, 2020, coming into force date.

To help all lobbyists familiarize themselves with the new legislation and their obligations, shorter, more frequent Influencing BC updates with news about the LTA is available online and distributed to lobbyists via email. The most recent Feb. 2020 publication of Influencing BC is now available.

The Office of Registrar of Lobbyists is conducting an education campaign to provide lobbyists and the public with information to understand and comply with the new Act and regulations. Check our Upcoming Events page in the ORL News section for details on three free public information sessions planned for April 2020.
