Lobbyists Transparency Act
The BC government published the Lobbyists Transparency Regulation on November 25, 2019. The regulation came into force on May 4, 2020. At that time, the title of the statute changed from the Lobbyists Registration Act to the Lobbyists Transparency Act, or LTA.
The LTA contains a number of amendments to increase transparency in lobbying. They include the requirement for lobbyists to complete a Monthly Return containing details of actual lobbying activities in the previous month by the 15th of each month.
In support of the changes, a new BC Lobbyists Registry replaced the former Lobbyists Registry on May 4, 2020. The new Lobbyists Registry will be user-friendly and similar to the federal system.
FAQs and Guidance Documents are available to assist with understanding the LTA regulatory changes and using the new Lobbyists Registry. Use the menu to the left to review these resources.
Note: A transition period from May 4, 2020, to June 15, 2020, is provided for lobbyists to file a new registration or update their current registrations in the new Lobbyists Registry and to file their first Monthly Return for any lobbying activities in the month of May. For lobbyists responding to the COVID-19 epidemic who may require more time, the transition period extends to September 15, 2020. Lobbyists who are able to file their Registration Return and Monthly Return by June 15, 2020, are expected to do so.
